When I first heard the spoken beat, it immediately put me in a New York State of mind. As soon as the drums hit, It took me back to that classic East Coast sound that I grew up with as a kid. Being from Cali, I can recall a time when that whole East vs West conflict dominated the rap scene. When I think about it now, its funny but back then their were actually cats getting mad at the way me and my crew got down. They felt we were too caught up in the East Coast, rocking Timberlands and hoodies like we just hopped off the subway. It was no secret that we were fans of that rugged NYC sound. We repped it to the point that we defended it as if it were our own. When a lot of folks out west turned away from East Coast hip hop, we gravitated to it even more.
This album (Standing Ovation) is a step inside my mind and Spoken represents the respect I have for East Coast artistry! I love my home sound but the East helped shaped who I am as a person. It was the Wu-Tang, Boot Camp, Das Efx, Tribe Called quest, ETC that had an impact on my consciousness as an artist. I've always been a fan of good music regardless of where it came from. If the message and music is right then I'm with it.
